Does Astrology Work?

January 22nd, 2007

When I was a young artist living in Brooklyn, I had a car with no interior lining (it had been stolen for parts). I met a man from the Northwest. After dinner I drove him and our friends over the Manhattan Bridge in my car. He was enchanted by the experience, so different from his wide sky existence. We began a burning correspondence (before email or express mail) and after a few months I became convinced it was worth a flight to Oregon to see if the writer and the man were one and the same. Friends who were studying astrology poured over our horoscopes but did not discourage me. When I returned, let down and confused, they nodded sagely. They had been pretty sure it wasn’t going to work. Although I was initially annoyed they didn’t tell me, I did understand their reservations (they were only students at the time). I began to study astrology obsessively. I was determined to understand what they’d seen in a single geometric picture, the clues I’d missed in a shoebox full of letters.

How does astrology work? Long before IPods, TiVo, cell phones and computers, people would stare at the stars at night to try to fathom the larger world. Medical science confirms that meditation can relieve stress. Meditation is a method that connects us to the “universal unconscious” as Carl Jung coined it; the vibratory plane of existence where we’re all connected. Long ago, people without electronic distractions were naturally meditating while doing repetitive tasks, relaxing or stargazing.

They took the time to study the spark of the Vernal Equinox and how it correlated with the constellation Aries, the beginning of the zodiacal belt. The myths they wove fit symbolically with the pattern of the seasons as well as the evolution of a person’s natural life. The Greeks liked mathematical order, so they carved up the twelve zodiacal signs into equal slices of 30 degrees to fit a 360 degree wheel (which is not how the constellations actually lie). Nonetheless, this methodical system creates a balance that has worked for astrologers for thousands of years. Compressing big concepts into geometry was a way of creating an order we can understand. It is an order we see everyday, where sacred geometric patterns echo throughout our natural world.

The ancients sat and contemplated the night sky, deriving stories and myths that resonate with us today, providing a psychic compass. One might speculate these impressions or archetypes were messages from God giving us signposts to help us cope. Regardless of the source, taking the time to decode the messages helps an astrologer understand how and why a person acts, thinks and feels. Astrology can show us how we relate to other people (and they to us); provide timing for events and the cycles of our lives.

I never intended to become a professional astrologer when I first studied astrology to try to comprehend my love-life. But I discovered a method to help me in all my relationships, especially the pivotal one, knowing myself.

At business networking events, when I tell people what I do, sometimes the response is: “I don’t believe in astrology”. This reminds me when I was a freelance designer in the 80’s. Some of my colleagues were jumping to computers which I found limiting in aesthetic output! I might well have said, “I don’t believe in computers” as I ignored the obvious advantages they possessed. Of course, I eventually found computers invaluable for both my work as an astrologer and an artist.

Astrology is not a belief system. Astrology is a tool that can help you. Like html, astrology is a language you can choose to learn for yourself. Or you can see an astrologer when you need insight, in the same way you can hire someone to make you a website if you don’t want to learn html. Astrology can help you make choices with your eyes open to potential outcomes. Years ago, had I been using astrology, I might still have gone to the Northwest, but not with the same expectations.

Chinese Astrology Compatibility

January 10th, 2007

There is a belief amongst the Chinese community that those who are born four years apart are more compatible than those who are born six year apart. And those that are born 6 years apart are likely to be less compatible. Do you know why?

In the 12 Animals Zodiac system of astrology, our character is influenced by our year of birth. For example those born in the year of the rat are intelligent and suspicious while those born in the year of the horse are generous and loves freedom. Based on our year of birth we are imbued with certain characteristics that make us more of less compatible with each other.

According to the ancient Chinese, the Monkey, Rat and Dragon form a compatible set. They have characteristics that make them more compatible with each other. The other compatible sets are the Snake, Rooster and Ox; the Pig, Rabbit and Goat and the Tiger, Horse and Dog. If you check the year of birth you notice that they are four years apart. For example those born in 1964 are Rats, 1968 are Dragons and 1972 are Monkeys!

The Rat on the other hand is supposedly less compatible than the Horse. They form an incompatible set. The other incompatible sets are between Ox and Goat, Tiger and Monkey, Rabbit and Rooster, Dragon and Dog and between the Snake and Pig. If you check the year of birth you will notice that they are six year apart!

The Chinese astrology compatibility tools that you find on the Internet are largely based on the above mentioned principles of combination and clash. Most will also include more combinations and clashes that I have not mentioned above but I hope you get the idea.

What if you and your spouse form an incompatible set? Do not panic. Did you notice that I used the word ‘supposedly’ many times? In practice our character is also heavily influenced by the month, day and hour of birth which is not taken into consideration in the above examples. Therefore it is entirely possible for a Rat person to display characteristics of other animals (influences from the month, day and hour of birth)!

In my practice, I have seen many supposedly incompatible sets of husbands and wives. They are still together after many years of marriage and some of them quite happily! Perhaps love plays a part too.

Astrology Tattoo Is More Than a Mere Fashion

December 11th, 2006

Astrology symbols have become very popular tattoo designs, such as a scorpion or a bull as body art. This is due to astrological symbols making great tattoo designs. There is also a quiet mysticism that surrounds these signs that makes them a popular choice for the younger population.

Besides the zodiac signs celestial bodies like the sun and the moon also make popular tattoo designs. Most of the astrology tattoos are done in bright colours that give them a life of their own. Astrology tattoo designs can be tattooed just about anywhere as body art, such as arm bands, lower-back, ankles, chest or shoulders.

Different astrological systems have different signs which represent different meanings. However, the preferred astrology tattoo designs are based on the Greek or Roman zodiac system. These include the twelve different signs namely Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius.

Each of the astrological signs depicts an animal, character or object associated with it. Here are the traditional symbols associated with each sign of the Zodiac:

Capricorn (December 23 to January 20) is depicted by a Goat.

Aquarius (January 21 to February 19) by the Water Carrier

Pisces (February 20 to March 20) by the Fish

Aries (March 21 to April 20) by a Ram

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) by a Bull

Gemini (May 22 to June 21) by the Wolf

Cancer (June 22 to July 22) by the Crab

Leo (July 23 to August 22) by the Lion

Virgo (August 23 to September 23) by a Woman

Libra (September 24 to October 23) by Pair of Scales

Scorpio (October 24 to November 22) by the Scorpion

Sagittarius (November 23 to December 22) by the Centaur Archer

Other widely practiced arts include those devised by the Native American, incorporating the medicine wheel as an important part of their astrological system, and the Chinese that depicts animal names and traits to people born in a certain year.

All the astrology tattoo designs are characterized by certain qualities that make them unique. For instance, they are especially meaningful if they happen to be your sun sign, tattooing the sun sign that you were born under can be a simple way of reflecting your unique personality, goals and interests.

Today, the astrology tattoo designs can be seen on a wide selection of people from all nationalities and age. Earlier, the tattoos were limited to sailors and maybe artists. Now days, all tattoos are flaunted with great pride.

Internet Dating Cautions

November 22nd, 2006

Do you know how to meet interesting, honest people on the internet who you want to date? Are you looking for love online but are afraid you will find a loser instead? Many people face your same dilemma.

If you are single and looking for someone, you have a world of dates to choose from on the internet. But you must exercise caution.

How can you tell the difference between the imposters and the sincere people? Here are some simple rules to remember:

*Do not give your real name.

Use your dating name until you know you can trust the person you are talking to.

*Never give your address or home phone number.

If you decide to talk on the phone after chatting on line, get a prepaid cell phone so the number cannot be traced.

*Listen carefully for content.

At any point, if the person asks for or shares inappropriate information that is sexual in nature, sign off. Do not trust them.

*Is the conversation basically negative or positive?

Does the person complain a lot? Are they speaking unkindly about their Ex, boss, friends, or parents? If most of the conversation is negative in nature, this is a red flag that this person has issues they have not dealt with. If you try to have a relationship with this person, he or she will deposit this baggage on you.

*Meet in a public place.

If you agree to meet, do it in a public place, preferably in the middle of the day. Coffee houses are neutral, as well as casual restaurants. Use your own transportation to get yourself there and back.

*Take your cell phone.

It is always a good idea to have a friend call you while you are with this person. If the meeting is not going well, the call can be the interruption that you needed to excuse yourself.

*Practice safety.

ALWAYS let someone know where you are and who you are meeting. If this person is a complete stranger, you could ask a friend or two to be sitting in a nearby booth at the place where you are going to meet.

*Watch out for the bragging.

If this person sounds too good to be true…he or she probably is. If you plan to date someone you do not know well, get some kind of a background check.

Because of the internet, you have more options and choices and people to meet than ever before in history. You also have more challenges than ever before. You have to wade through all of the information to see who is real and who is pretending to be something they are not.

Be cautious, be wise, and know: there is someone wonderful searching for you. Don’t jump into the wrong relationship too quickly before the right one can find you.

Why Do Astrological Predictions Go Wrong?

September 28th, 2006

“I have studied it, you have not!”, is the famous retort of Sir Isaac Newton when confronted by Edmond Halley, his student on the master’s belief in astrology. There are those who protest that astrology is not a science since it does not conform to the principle of falliability. Every hypothesis is true till it is proved otherwise. Yet, there are people who swear by astrology. They would consult the stars endlessly on each and every issue and would let themselves be driven by their astrologer guides.

What will happen tomorrow? - is a query that can never be answered by any science or art other than astrology. Science is about what has or can happen in the light of well-doctrined principles. A doctor can tell the state of a living being at a given time with all the tests performed and possibly expect improvement in health or otherwise. From times immemorial, it has been the seer who was relied upon. Nostradamus’ prophecies or Brahammam’s predictions are known the world over. There is criticism that most often astrological predictions fail and hence, people lose faith in the claims of astrologers. The reasons are not hard to seek!

Firstly, astrology has not evolved much from the age-old days. Still in India, people are trying to decipher old texts or translate them from Sanskrit. The mystery of ‘Nadi Astrology’ (predictions written on Palmyrah leaves) is not yet fully solved though some had made investigations. The owners of these leaves would not let out the secrets to anyone except their kith and kin for fear of losing their livelihood. Some dismiss these as rubbish while some hail them as the most complex of all mysteries. The principle appears to be that all planetary positions in a horoscope will repeat after an interval and so will the destinies of people.

Secondly, there is no formal education in occult subjects, though, a few universities have, of late, initiated some diploma courses. Most of the astrologers learn by self-study while approach a Guru. Proficiency levels vary and are also questionable. Some have ‘discovered’ some opinions based on statistics while some have claimed that their understanding is superior to others. There are different aspects in Indian Astrology like ‘Hora Shastra’,'Stree Jataka’,'Nashta Jataka’, ‘Muhurtha’,'Prasna’ etc. There are also different methods and systems like ‘Parasari’,'Jaimini’,'Kala Chakra’ etc. Complete mastery even in one school of thought differentiates the best from the beast!

Thirdly, there are many assumptions and presumptions which are ignored. Basically, three data are essential :- Time of Birth, Date of Birth and Place of Birth. After casting the horoscope either by computer or manually, the astrologer gets ready to judge and predict based on a set of principles. But there are issues! First, what is meant by time of birth? Is it the first cry of the baby, or is it the touching of ground, or is it the time when the umbilical cord is cut? It has also been opined that the time of conception is more important. Second, there is a dispute about the ‘ayanamsa’ or precession. Most of the astrologers adopt the value given by Lahiri. The late Dr.B.V.Raman had advocated the ‘Raivatha Paksha Ayanamsa’. Krishnamurthy had given another. The Western counter-part is lucky in that he follows the ‘Sayana’ method wherein the first point of Aries is considered movable. In other words, a horoscope casted by the Western Tropical method (Sayana), say, locates Jupiter in Aries,in the other chart casted by the Eastern Sidereal method (Nirayana) may place it in Pisces!

Lastly, opinions differ about signs and houses. The ‘bhava’ (house) chart can be different depending upon the system adopted for calculations. Many Indian astrologers adopt the Equal House system but are mostly unaware when to use the ‘Rasi’ chart and when the ‘Bhava’ chart. A salient point, however, remains. What is a rising sign? Is it right to consider it as the cusp?

Astro*Carto*Graphy Locality Report by Bewitched Astrology: A Review

September 27th, 2006

After reading this report with some fascination, I have come to agree with the often heard adage, “Location, location, location. Astro*Carto*Graphy was first introduced as a technique in 1976 and it gained wide acceptance within the astrological community. It is based on the common idea that a person can have different chances, fortune, experiences or opportunities in different localities. It looks at the planet’s relationships to your locality at your birth moment. If a planet was particularly strong in the location of your birth, then its’ influence will continue if you travel, reside or have any involvement with the area from another place.

This system also operates under the insight that you can find yourself obliged to live in a less than optimum locality setting. The information offered requires you to look beneath any superficial desires or concerns that you are operating under, and try to understand just what state of emerging consciousness could have brought you to this place. This allows you the unique opportunity to overcome the sometimes very Dark Night of the Soul interpretations that can occur and learn to recognize the positive aspects which will help you overcome any dark or negative planetary influence. Saturn and Neptune can be particularly heavy planetary influences and my locality report was heavily influenced by Saturn and it’s many dark aspects. My Permanent Influence (Lines) was Saturn and My Secondary Influence (Crossings) was the Moon and Mars. Sounds pretty heavy already doesn’t it.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I travel a hard road. I have always held the thought that since I could never find a road, I was going to have to build one. It certainly has been no day on the beach, but I certainly wouldn’t be who I am today, if it weren’t for the challenges of my life which forced the exploration of my Higher Darkness. I feel that this report has captured the weight of my experience and gave me some reassurance that I have done my best to embrace this darkness. I was brought here out of need for deeper investigation of my darker side and my hidden self. The planetary influence has also brought me head to head with the negative aspects of Saturn: people who lust for power; dealing with entrenched authority and being powerless to frustrating, unresponsive people who “hold unassailable power over you”; blind conservatism and institutional dehumanization (see anything I have written about Hydro Ottawaand that is only one example). This area has also brought me depressed health and emotional levels plus lots of hard work. It has been a slow, painful progress, just as the report states, which has made me learn how powerful determination, tenacity and resoluteness can be. I don’t take one step backwards - not anymore. As St. John of the Cross said “….the endurance of darkness is preparation for great light.”

The report also emphasizes that I am here in an attempt to resolve my relationship with my Father. I am repeating my paternal experience over and over again in my relationships with all the males in my life. I do have a lot of male friends at this point in my life, more male than female, and they are true friendships which have grown over time. I have also taken in 9 young men here and helped them regain their sense of balance and stability. I think this worked out because I can understand dangerously unloved and damaged (I think my cooking went over well too). The relationship with my Father has not improved, maybe I have just finally let go and I accept that he won’t change - he prefers my brothers, it is his choice, and I will never have his approval or love. One of the great sadnesses in my life is how much I adored my Father, but never managed more than the smallest crumb off his table. This is where I learned to feast on a crumb and it has not served me well in my life. I always take the least for myself, give more than I have to give, and twist myself into a pretzel to please and appease people around me. If I could only be perfect, then my Father will love me. All it has gotten me is disrespect, disillusionment, low self-esteem, impotent anger, and the recurrent problem of people making very assumptive, hurtful and erroneous judgments about me. The report also very strongly captures the periods of hardship, financial difficulty, hunger, delays, disappointments and loneliness. It also speaks of miserliness which I must admit is the basis of most of my intimate relationships - I can always find an emotional miser.

In a more positive turn, the report also points out that in spite of (or maybe it is because of), these hardships in my experiences, it has brought hardwork, willpower, frugality, taking life one day at a time, thinking little of pleasure or rewards but has kept me focused on humility and doing a good job. The report also says orderliness but the last word I would use to describe myself is orderly unless orderly chaos is an option. This location and my need for self-protection has also lead to my dabbling in the “forbidden” - the occult and black arts. The more you study and research in the area of Tarot, Divination, Omens, Superstitions and Dreams, the more you are exposed to. Your discernment has to be razor-sharp. I am doing the right kind of work here though, earthy and self-motivated, although my thinking and my writing is often preoccupied with death, materialism and fate.

The report often makes reference to my hermit like qualities, I excell in self-denial, mortification for the sake of others, comtemplation and self-mastery. This area has allowed me to get in touch with Earth centred traditions, Native Spirituality and more primal, tribal types of social community even if isolation is part of my environment and I do lack in social accessibility. The limiteations of this area have helped me identify the limits of my endurance. It has also put me in a very “masculine” dominated world and my very poor intimate relationships with men have been glaringly dangerous and painful here. I draw men to me who can only show me anger, vindictiveness, rage and erractic behaviours - sex without love or affection, emotionally detached and unavailable, no faithfulness and a cruel need to destroy me because I will not be mastered. They are victims of their own self-pride and a “macho” masculinity which manifests as materialism, egotism and jealous paranoia. Add that to the issues with authority and my need for self-protection, I have had to stand on shaky ground alone for a very long time, it is little wonder I tell battered women to buy life insurance.

The Locality Report is broken down into several sections. The length of a report may vary for each individual. My report is laid out in the following manner: Your Chart Data; Introduction; If You’re Just Visiting, You Made a Rather Strange Choice; If You Plan to Live Here, You’d Better Like Working; The God Who Didn’t Take Chances; It’s Hard to Know When You Need Discipline; Where Pleasure Seems Trivial; The Magnetism of What is Feared; The Inner Desert; Secondary Influences; It’s Hard Work to be a Hero; and the Epilogue. All in all this is a very thorough report and provided me information which I strongly recognized and identified with. It was not easy to read or to absorb. My grievances were very clearly articulated in this report but some good insights on how to deal positively with these influences was certainly beneficial.

I think most people would find this a very unique appraisal of their life circumstance. If you were considering a move or were finding life difficult, it would certainly give some great insights into just why all this is happening to you or if you would be better off, or worse off, in another area. Like I said, it’s all about location, location, location. While my report may seem very dark, please bear in mind that this is my report for my circumstances, and yours could be very much different. You can order your own locality report via email to Bewitched Astrology. An emailed report is $15Cdn, payable using PayPal or you can request a hard copy snail-mailed for $20 Cdn. Definitely worth checking out.

The World of Online Personals

September 5th, 2006

One day while I was hanging out on the Internet, I stumbled across something very interesting. It took me by surprise and I’m not really sure why. It was nothing scandalous, it was simply the online personals section of my local web portal. What I’ve read on these online personals is what made me pause. I knew I had been out of the dating game for quite a while. I never imagined that they would become so racy.

First of all, there were suddenly a whole lot more ladies participating on these WAP site that I had recalled. I will have to admit that when I was a little bit younger, I enjoy checking out the online personals in hopes of meeting women. Going to the nearest bar and scouting for them felt creepy, and getting a date from one of my classmates was out of the question.

When you are one of the only few nerds in a class filled with quarterbacks and other sporty types, your chances of getting a date are next to nil. That is why I turn to online personals as my means for meeting the ladies.

Truth be told, I actually met some very fine young ladies through the online personals. My first regular girlfriend was someone that I had met through the online personals. She may have been quite a bit older than I was, and come to think of it, quite a bit heavier, but hey, that’s the way it goes.

Another encounter that I had with a woman met through the online personals ended up costing me quite a bit of money. But even which conned me out of it. I should say I allowed myself to be conned. After all, when a girl asks you for your credit card number in the very second online meeting, would you be dumb enough to give it to her? Unfortunately for me, I was. For once it paid off to have a credit card that was pretty much maxed out. In any event I never heard from her again and I appreciate that. As it turned out, it was a small price to pay to get her out of my life.

In any event, getting back to the subject at hand, I was amazed by the openness and lack of scruples shown by these women. Not only were they more open about revealing who they actually were, a few of them actually became pretty explicit and verbalizing exactly what they were after. A far cry from my hey days on the online personals when it was taken for granted that the guys were all looking to get laid and the girls were all looking for the right groom.

It seems as if anything on the online personals is free game at this point. It was kind of interesting. I sure was glad for the openness and opportunities the youngsters were enjoying. I must confess that I felt a little bit of envy that it wasn’t me. So if you do happen to get onto the online personals section of my local portal, see if there is a gopher15 hanging around. It may or may not just be me.

Dispelling Internet Dating Myths

September 5th, 2006

Myth # 1: Meeting women online isn’t the real world

Response: It becomes the real world once you meet them in person

Myth # 2: It becomes a crutch for people

Response: In that case, so are clubs or any specific venue where you operate within only one environment, and within certain times of day

Myth # 3: All the girls you meet have some sort of problem

Response: In bigger cities where internet dating is more mainstream, this is certainly not the case. The average woman you meet online is representative of the average woman outside

Myth # 4: You lose communication skills

Response: You challenge your communication skills. In fact, in some ways it is even harder to pull from online since all you have is the power of text.

Myth # 5: It’s a numbers game

Response: It’s always a numbers game. One main difference is that women are less likely to remember you if you “screwed up” online. But once you get more skill you can try with the same women again, with a different picture and a different profile.

Myth # 6: It just doesn’t work, period. You’re wasting your time.

Response: All people who say this haven’t gotten it to work. They don’t see a way to do it because they personally haven’t found a way. So the problem is with them, period. There’s an even bigger matrix for meeting women online than in-person. This is evident as even certain club pick-up “gurus” renounce its effectiveness.

Myth # 7: Hot women on the internet are validation queens who don’t actually want to meet. They just enjoy the attention.

Response: Hot women in many places are validation queens, whether they are sitting in front of a computer or out at the club - they are usually in the princess mindset. If you can get her attention, you can get her interest.

Myth # 8: It limits your choices.

Response: I can technically meet more woman at a time, say with multiple messenger chat windows, then with the one-at-a-time in-person approach.

Myth # 9: You don’t know what you’re doing wrong unlike in real life where you get actual feedback. Moreover, the online medium doesn’t help you to understand women in general.

Response: This is only partially true, which is why you must get in-person field experience as well. It helps you understand the online game better. However, by getting girls on my messenger I can observe certain behavior patterns which I would not normally have noticed so clearly any other way.

Example 1 - If a girl likes me she will always initiate messaging me. Once I get them on messenger (like msn) I can roughly gauge her interest like a meter, based on how and when she uses the Away, Busy, or Online status.

If she likes me and really wants to talk to me she will change her Away or Busy status to Online, when I log in. Conversely, if she doesn’t like me she will switch to Away or Busy status when I log in. Much easier than calling and re-calling a girl who won’t answer the phone, whom you can’t quite tell if she is just not interested or just has a lot on the go. Also, as an added benefit, if I go out with a girl and then afterwards I never see her online anymore, it means she blocked me and is not interested. So I know I don’t have to waste my time trying to call her, to find that out the hard way. But if instead she shows up online then chances are it means she wants to see me again.

Unlike the phone where even girls who like you won’t always initiate calling you, by getting them on your messenger you take away that source of “stage fright”, and make them more likely to chase you a bit. Which means that IF they like you they will message you, ALWAYS, even the shy girls. Confusing a girls lack of interest with fear of answering your calls, is a thing of the past, especially for younger girls, and/or girls who live at home with their parents.

Example 2 - I can more easily, based on behavior patterns, figure out which women are seeking pure attention from me as opposed to actually being interested. I’ve had a few women message me out of the blue who sort of hinted at meeting up, and so I took the bait and went for it. But then they declined as they were “too busy”. I then looked at the Allow List on my msn, and I found out that these same women deleted me from their contact list soon after. This helps me to isolate and understand the type of behavior which indicates genuine interest, and that which is geared towards having me chase, for an ego boost.

Myth # 10: It’s too time consuming.

Response: It’s less time consuming because all I have to do is be in the right mental state, as opposed to being in the right mental state, dressed up, cleaned up, and in the right venue. I can do this during lunch hour at work, or while in my pajamas at home.

Myth # 11: It creates excuses.

Response: Excuses become less plausible. There are no cockblocks, or other obstacles to complain about. You can’t even say there are lack of targets since searches turn up thousands of prospects, especially in major cities.

Myth # 12: It takes less skill then real life.

Response: In some ways it takes more skill because, as I said, all you have is the power of text to work with. The internet is difficult which is why in-person meeting is more accessible to most initially. Then once you get some real life skill then give online a shot, and if you’re like me, the internet will make meeting women way more efficient for you, and less costly too - as clubs, alcohol, and cab fare are fairly expensive.
